Adventures out of school.

By Anges Felis and Josep Maria Gual.

John has just turned nine. He is the youngest at home, because his two sisters are older than him. But… he is not that young anymore!
Besides, at school he is one of the bravest pupils in his class because, When the older kids want to take the football pitch from them, he faces up to them and defends his classmates’ right to be there because they got there first.

Today is one of those days when they have had an argument with the older kids and he feels ready to face the word with nothing to fear.

He and Damian have been the heroes; thanks to them, after lunch, they were able to play football at playtime. In the afternoon everybody was talking about the argument in class and, when the time to go home arrived, he was overjoyed.
He takes his bag and leaves after Peter, Sylvia and Kevin, who always go together because they are neighbours.

Like any other afternoon, there is always somebody from home waiting for him at the gate.
Today his oldest sister, Emily, and her boyfriend, Joe, have gone to pick him up. She kisses him and asks him how his day has been.

John says that it went very well but suddenly he realises that he doesn’t feel like telling them anything about what he has done or what has happened at playtime.
They start walking home and Emily gives him his tea: a ham sandwich and juice.
Everything is really nice, but there is something missing… or maybe there is something extra!

His sister, who was talking to Joe, asks him:
“What’s up John? Won’t you tell us anything?”
“Well… you know? I’m not that younganymore and I’m quite brave”.
“Oh! I’m sure but… why are you telling me this now?”
“Because if I know the way home from school, why can’t I go on my own?”.
"And why do you want to go on your own? Are Joe and I bothering you?”
“Err… ” John mumbles.

He always got on very well with Emily and Joe is the nicest boyfriend she is ever had, but the truth is he would prefer to go on his own.
“How come you don’t want us to go and pick you up?” insists Emily.
“Because, if you always come and pick me up and you always go with me, and I always have to go with an adult everywhere, when will I have adventures of my own?”.
So that’s what was bothering John!
Emily and Joe start laughing, although they have to acknowledge that John is totally right.
